Making adjustments for climate change

Photo I took this week of a Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) in my back yard.
Red-bellied Woodpecker Melanerpes carolinus

Last year was the hottest recorded in my area since they started keeping records. We had an unusually warm Winter too. While it did snow twice it only stuck once. That melted in less than 10 hours. Temperatures have been way above normal. It has been in the 60's and 70's with a few days in the 20's and 30's thrown in every week or so. No possibility of getting used to it. I guess that is why so many people ended up sick.

Plants and trees that should not be blooming until April and May are blooming right now, in February.
Last year we went directly from Winter to Summer. Completely skipping Spring altogether. Most of my early garden plants did not make it. This year it looks as if it may be worse so I am planting them now. I can always toss a cold frame over them for the couple of nights a week we dip into the 20's.

Red Tailed Hawk

There is a red tailed hawk that has been living here for a number of years now. After a rain storm I noticed him in the tree line across a field next to my house. My camera only has a 24X zoom and he was about 150 yards (450 feet) from me so this is the best shot I could get. The 2nd image is just a crop from the 1st.

Gardening gel experiment

I usually repot my house plants in the Spring but decided to go ahead and do it today so I could try out something I saw on YouTube this morning. A gardening gel made from diapers. I am doing this now so that I will know if it is worth it in a few months when I start my outside planters. If It is I will use it in them. Here is the video.....
